This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Nest Egg for the Early Birds

The generosity of the North East Jazz community (both in terms of spirit and resources) has been well known to your correspondent for several years. Such generosity manifests in the warm welcomes given both to those wish to make music and to those (like myself) who sit and listen; in the gracious way in which the seasoned veterans give way to jam session sitters-in; in the encouragement given throughout the community to the next generation of jazz musicians; in the thoughtful tributes paid to those who have completed their journey; and in the willingness to contribute financially and in kind to the greater good.

Such generosity was recently exemplified by Norman Redhead, the house drummer for Dave Weisser’s long running Take it to the Bridge workshop. Whilst attending Matthew’s Farewell Jazz Party earlier this month, Norman (pictured) heard that the Early Bird Band Project was seeking funds to purchase a drum kit for use by the band. Without missing a beat, Norman stepped forward and offered up a full bop kit (drums, cymbals, hardware and throne) for the benefit of the Early Bird Project. The kit has been delivered to its new home at Newcastle’s Lit & Phil.
Norman’s lavish gift will enable the funds raised by the party event (£374 raised through the generosity of the wider jazz community) to be spent on other initiatives within the Early Bird project. Rumour has it that an Early Bird Big Band is on the cards….watch this space!!
In the meantime following the success of the Farewell Party, your correspondent is considering an annual summer fundraiser following a similar format to celebrate and encourage the next wave of players. Let me know if you think this is a good idea.

An annual summer fundraiser is a great idea, on one condition...that others help out in putting the thing together, you can't be expected to do it all yourself!

Norman's generosity in donating a drum kit is something else!

Since Paul and I set up Early Birds the support from other performers and audience members has been jaw dropping.

People have given up time and money to help the group far beyond anything Paul and I could have ever dreamed of and Norman's gift is a shining example of that generosity.

The Early Birds have taken flight.
