The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Jazz Café Jam Session - June 20













(Review by Lance).
The house trio got things rolling with It Could Happen to You; Blue Skies and Exactly Like You which, in places, was exactly like Take the A Train. Alan Law was on fire with Grainger and Morgan adding additional fuel - a promising start.
Grainger remained on board to be joined by Martin Waugh, a fine piano man down from Edinburgh, Keith Barrett, guitarist, more often seen at the Globe Jazz Bar and drummer Fairhurst, a regular at both venues.
Barrett opted for No Moon at All which was a wise choice as was Waugh's Nobody Else But me.
Joel Brown took over the piano stool his shorts and trainers reminding us it was summertime. Fortunately, he changed seasons and played Autumn Leaves. John Pope spelled PG on bass for All of Me followed by a somewhat indecisive take on Monk's I Mean You. When the pianist has his back to the rest of the band communication can be difficult.
No such problems with Like Someone in Love.

Up to now, the listeners had been somewhat thin on the ground but, perhaps the word had got around that Julija was in town and the room began to fill up.
With the house trio behind her she gave an emotive rendition of When Sunny Gets Blue then upped the tempo with There Will Never be Another You.
John Pope came back on bass and Matthew MacKellar moved in behind the kit.
An absolutely amazing Mood Indigo - amazing because it's never been one of my favourite numbers. Well, let me tell you, it is now!
The lady from Lithuania finished her set with You'd be so Nice to Come Home to. A sentiment that I'm sure was shared by many!
Martin Waugh came back for a funky Wes Montgomery number - Road Song. Let's hope he pops down the road more often.
Young Joel then went into Caravan with young Matthew and Pope John. I wanted to stay but I too had a caravan to catch which I achieved with about 30 seconds to spare.
Another night to remember.
