This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Alison Lewis - Seven

‘Seven’ is 5 tracks which are, in the singer’s words,‘re-imagined’ standard songs, plus 2 of Ms Lewis’s own songs.
 I started listening with some qualms, just another singer I thought, but I was soon converted by hearing Ms Lewis’s clear voice, excellent diction, wide vocal range, accompanied by well competent musicians. This is a debut CD and our singer moved from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 2009, having been involved in an a cappella group, community choirs, gospel choirs, cover bands, R & B, jazz ensembles, film and television.
Phew!
Lennon and McCartney’s Blackbird  is piano led, and we hear the sounds of the cajon and udu, which give the song a sliding eastern sound; Cheek To Cheek is unusually slow, romantic rather than dance-like, quite magical in fact; Dylan’s Like A Rolling Stone is slow and meditative, flowing lyrics which you notice more when sung slowly; Lewis’s own Mr Right For Right Now is fun, a slinky sensuous love song about a good but temporary love affair with an effective steel guitar solo.  Then we have the other original Seesaw, a metaphor for a love affair, with the voice up and down like the seesaw; voice and bass only play on Midnight Sun and the final track is a slow version of My Funny Valentine, skilfully‘re-imagined’. It’s good to hear versions of these songs with a different perspective.
The CD was self-released on 16th June 2016, and is apparently available from all fine retailers.
