This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Smokin’ Spitfires @ The Cluny. June 5

The sun shone in a cloudless blue sky. The band could be found in the bar. None of this new breed bottled water business for them! A Smokin’ Spitfires’ Sunday lunchtime gig at the Cluny has parallels with an Eastside Torpedoes’ session at the University Theatre (now Northern Stage) with a dedicated following making it a regular date (first Sunday).
These days veteran front man vocalist Neil Hunter is wearing an epic Santa Claus beard otherwise it’s the same big soul voice; Junior Parker, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave. An explosive start, horns firing, Mike Hepple’s smokin’ Hammond, the rhythm section bang on the money. The Barefootin’ crowd danced the afternoon away. How Sweet it is to be Loved by You, the band so good, ‘tight’ is the word. Sing along, dance along, a drinker’s gig. 634-5789, Hold On, I’m Comin’ . The gig works because it’s an ace band. The horns, the Hammond, Bob Garrington’s Telecaster, drummer Gary Cain the driving force.
The Smokin’ Spitfires’ monthly gig at the Cluny is a fund raiser for the Bubble Foundation. Get along, support a good cause and have a guaranteed great time.
