This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) CD Review: Benet McLean - The Bopped and the Bopless.

The Bopped and the Bopless could easily be The Hipped and the Hopless! Not that I’m complaining, far from it. This is as fine an example of cross-gendering as you’ll find in a long day’s pogoing across the great divide. Suddenly the divide doesn’t seem that great! Take a look at the players involved – jazzmen to a core, albeit with their own tributaries that they occasionally sail off on, and they  do the business here.
The business, of course, is run by McLean, of whom Ian Shaw said, “When Benet sings and plays, something so precise, virtuosic, soulful and swinging happens, it’s almost unnerving. That he isn’t playing arenas but is the Soho Prince of Jazz is of course wrong, yet refreshing. Dig, dig, dig!”
Not sure I can add to that except to concur and nod sagely. The only problem being, that when I nod ‘sagely,’ people think I’ve fallen asleep which, take it from me folks, you won’t be making with the zzzzzzzs whilst listening to this.
