JNE Stand at GIJF

In January, we asked BSH site visitors if they had any old Jazz North East programmes or photos from the early years of JNE to help celebrate our 50th year. We’ve had a good response and have used a sample of the many items loaned to us to create a display on the Concourse at the GIJF this weekend, as part of our JNE stall.  Come along and see, and chat to us about them!!  And if you have any old JNE programmes, tickets or photos from the early years (or later, as we’re still interested in those too) then it’s not too late to share them with us.  If you have then we’d love to see them.

Some gems we’ve uncovered include many signed tickets from gigs, a large array of posters and many photographs.  One signed ticket, in particular, raised a smile – it’s from Al Grey in 1972 and will be proudly displayed along with more memorabilia.  We’ve also created a large poster covering our 50 years.
Some stats on what we’ve collected so far: Eight people have shared material with us, in addition to the National Jazz Archive.  We’ve scanned 230+ items covering 500+ individual items resulting in 1400 files from which to choose what to share in the display. From this we’ve put together a large poster covering our 50 years, a display sampling some highlights, spilling over into a book with many more items which we think you’ll like to thumb through.

As for dates covered …… for 1966 – 2008 there is lots of archive material – apart from any material from the first concert in March 1966. So far Ornette Coleman is the closest we’ve got, from May of that year.  For 2008 – 2010 we’re still looking for more photos and programmes, and for 2010-2016+ we have lots of recent photos and programme material but would like to see more!!
In addition to displaying some posters from last year, there are three new ones.  A ‘Year Poster’ showing many of the fine gigs we’ve seen this past year.  A ‘Paris-sur-Tyne’ poster – take a look, then ask if you need to!!  And a 50th Anniversary poster – covering 50 years of Jazz North East in only 18 pictures - but of course every picture tells a story!  This is a combination of material distilled from all that was collected plus some recent gig photos too.

If you’re interested in seeing what our 50-year history is all about then come along. Even better if you have some old tickets or photographs, or early posters you’d like to share then come and meet us on the Concourse at the Sage this weekend. Plus, there’s lots of good music on the Concourse (all FREE!!)  And many great bands in concert too.
Ken (JNE).
