This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Adam Fairhall + Markov Chain @ The Lit and Phil - December 3

Markov Chain-a stochastic model describing a sequence of possible events in which the probability of each event depends only on the state attained in the previous event memorylessness
Those who understand the definition above need read no further because I can't think of a better explanation of what was witnessed on Thursday night. This was free improvisation at its best; the trio creating a mesmerising cacophony of exhilarating combustible mayhem. 
Think flight of the Beeble Bum on acid. Drum maestro Paul Hession really smashing it whilst Tim Fairhall bowed his double bass like a master craftsman. Meanwhile brother Adam held the whole thing together with his mesmeric playing of the piano both inside and out.
The first part of the evening consisted of an astonishing solo performance from Adam Fairhall.  You name the style he played it: classical, free, bebop and particularly enjoyable ragtime all wrapped up within the piece.
A very enjoyable evening which according to Markovian principle may influence the next gig I go to but certainly not the one after that.
