This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Paul Dunmall/Tony Bianco @ The Bridge Hotel, Newcastle - Nov. 1

The first set contained 3 amazing drum solo’s and what was so unique about this is that was all it contained. Tony Bianco unleashed a hurricane of activity on the drum kit pausing only momentarily between the three pieces. The energy levels were immense as the tempo went from fast to faster and even faster still.  Not to everyone’s taste I’m sure but both mesmerising and hypnotic for all those present.
For the second set, Bianco was joined on reeds by long-time friend and collaborator Paul Dunmall. According to the advertising Dunmall was also meant to be playing the pipes but on this night he must have been aware of the old definition of a gentleman - “A man who knows how to play the bagpipes but doesn’t” The duo each gave as good as they got, Bianco still smashing his drums to oblivion and Dunmall responding with pyrotechnics on the reeds switching between tenor, alto and soprano like a master golfer switches from driver, to long iron to short iron. The energy of the performance was captivating and both protagonists looked exhausted on the completion of the set.
One would have to say that this gig  was for a somewhat niche audience, not suitable for those seeking melodious, measured  music but ideal for those looking  for excitement, raw energy and something completely different.  Photos.
