As
readers can see from the list of performers, this was a very varied night and
not everyone was playing their usual instruments, notably the Findens who had
left the saxes asleep at home. And it
was well balanced between folk and jazz. Take That had cancelled their Arena performance, obviously they
couldn’t stand the competition, so two ladies who’d gone by mistake strayed in
for a drink – the Globe attracts passing trade I’m pleased to say. These ladies weren’t able to stay long, then
another non-performing friend of the Globe appeared as audience – everyone else
was a performer, well able to entertain.
Minnie
and I duetted on Water Of Tyne and we
each did other folk songs such as the mythical Lovesome Hill and John
Anderson (Minnie) and A Sailor’s Life
(myself). John and Colin sang Streets Of London, a mining song by
local folky Johnny Handle, and others.
It was good to have Jim McGeehan doing Tyneside songs, though he often
does shanties (seamen’s work songs) with local folk band The Keelers.
The
jazz was very capably represented by Ron, Barry and Dave, with skilled
renderings of songs including Eric Bibb’s Home
Lovin’ Man and also Work Song. (Catch Barry and Ron at the Indigo
Voices sessions, next one on Thursday August 13). And the Findens treated us to 2 self-penned
songs and also to the superb sound of just voice and bass on How Insensitive and Autumn Leaves.
