This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Secret Gig of Riley @ The Lit & Phil. Monday April 27

The first Newcastle Noir takes place on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd May at the Lit & Phil on Westgate Road in Newcastle. Talks, tours and workshops will explore the multi-faceted crime writing genre. From page to screen, gangsters and gangs, the world of the legal eagle, it’s all there for the committed fan. There is, however, a mystery in the form of a ‘who dunnit?’ or rather a ‘who didn’t do it?’ that will forever remain unsolved.
Six days before Newcastle Noir takes over the city centre library, a little known event of interest to the jazz fan will take place. Monday 27th April (7:30pm) sees the Paul Riley Quintet playing in the Loftus Room. The gig was something of a secret. Why there was non-existent publicity will defeat the best of the sleuths. Jazz fans were kept in the dark. They knew nothing about it. Now they do! Reedsman Riley is on a Jazz Services’ tour promoting his recently released CD Into View (see Bebop Spoken Here’s review).
Joining Riley is a top-notch line-up: north-easterner Rick Simpson (piano), guitarist Ant Law (gigging with his own band in Hexham, May 20th), Matt Ridley (double bass) and drummer Will Glaser. Tickets are £10.00. and £8.00. It is no secret that this will be a gig of exceptional quality. Why not purchase a copy of the CD on the night and consider it ‘Exhibit A’ in the mysterious case of Paul Riley’s very low profile appearance at the Lit and Phil!
