This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. A Tea Pad, a Copper Bottom and Ms Lauren Bacall

The Beeb’s radio output in the first week of the new year looks promising. Saturday (Jan 3) has a reassuring sense of normality about it; Jazz Record Requests is in its usual place (Radio 3, 5:00pm), with Jazz Line-Up being mucked about again in the schedules (opera ‘Live from the Met’ taking precedence) – tune in at 8:30pm (more from Joshua Redman) and Geoffrey Smith’s Jazz at midnight takes a further look at the Basie band. Meanwhile, Clive Anderson’s guests on Loose Ends (Radio 4, 6:15pm) will be entertained by one of Heaton’s finest – Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra.
Sunday’s evening schedule on BBC Radio 4 Extra includes Wallsend lad Gordon Sumner  discussing creativity with Guy Raz in an edition of TED Radio Hour (7:00pm), originally broadcast on America’s National Public Radio. Later (9:00pm) Lauren Bacall is castaway on Desert Island Discs Revisited (in conversation with Roy Plomley in 1984). Monday is a day to get the blues; Paul Jones (the Peter Pan of the music) plays blues and r ‘n’ b, old and new (Radio 2, 7:00pm), then at ten o’clock the first of six programmes first broadcast in 2013 – Hugh Lawrie’s Blues Changes – looks at Jarrow lad Alan Price’s Changes. The late night survey of contemporary jazz – Jazz  on 3 – can be found over on Radio 3 at the  usual time (11:00pm).
Jamie Cullum (Tuesday, Radio 2, 7:00pm) continues to spread the J word and at 10:00pm piano player and broadcaster Jools Holland fronts the first of two programmes devoted to Chris Barber (originally broadcast in 2011 and again in 2013). Finally, on Thursday Jan 8 (Radio 2), Leo Green talks to Van Morrison in the first of four programmes. Van the Man will be 70 in August!
