Sean Noonan entered the arena in his now familiar boxing gown however one would have to say that this guy is more of a surrealist then a pugilist -think Salvador Dali rather than Muhammad Ali. Noonan is not only a damn fine drummer but also a composer and storyteller of mystic tales. This was the second visit to the Bridge for this combination of string quartet and drums (see previous BSH review).

 It’s a strange mixture of a classical chamber ensemble meeting  a thrash jazz drummer with the addition of a whimsical narrative - think Bartok meets Flan O’Brien meets Keith Moon. When Noonan isn’t playing you might think you were attending a classical recital. The first set began with a story about a man locked in a wall (a gamblers hand) and another about humans who return to the water to become seals (Selkies).   The second set featured titles from his next album which focus on a Polish mythological legend Skarbnik, who is the guardian of all the mines with the power to protect or punish the miners depending on their behaviour.  It’s hard to define this genre of music but why bother because Noonan’s boundless energy coupled  with the quality of the string quartet make it a uniquely entertaining experience.
