Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Glasgow and Edinburgh Vote 'Yes' For Jazz!

Bridge Music, the organisation that promotes jazz in the Jazz Bar in Edinburgh and Glasgow Art Club, has announced a full programme for September and October.
New York-based pianist John Colianni’s (pictured right) big swinging quartet leads a stylistically varied September menu in both venues (Edinburgh, Wed 3 and Glasgow, Thu 4), followed by drummer Tom Bancroft’s new experimental project, Vincent with Japanese pianist Satoko Fujii and bassist Una McGlone (10th and 11th). Scottish National Jazz Orchestra stalwarts, trumpeter Tom MacNiven and trombonist Phil O’Malley front their Blue Note-styled quintet (17th and 18th). Polish guitarist Przemyslaw Straczek brings his international quartet to Scotland for the first time (24th and 25th) and drummer Ollie Howell slots in an extra Bridge Music gig with his quintet at the Edinburgh venue on Sunday September 21).
October sees guitarist Jim Mullen return to home ground (Edinburgh, Wed 1 and Glasgow Thu 2) with his quartet. Then, having premiered his double big band commission Pro-Am in late July, saxophonist Paul Towndrow gets a bit more compact with his Organ Trio (8th and 9th). Another Glasgow based saxophonist, Brian Molley (pictured left) continues to spread the word of his debut album, Clock (15th and 16th) and Yorkshire’s Eyes Shut Tight and Scottish horn quartet Brass Jaw share the next midweek slots, with the former in Edinburgh (22nd) and the latter in Glasgow (23rd). Guitarist Nigel Price’s Organ Trio completes the line-up with gigs in Edinburgh (29th) and Glasgow (30th) as part of their extensive autumn UK tour.
