This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Darlington Jazz Festival. Sunday Evening Part One April 27

The evening session (the Darlington Jazz Club showcase) saw the transformation of the marquee. A few tables were moved around, the chandeliers dusted, beer supplies checked, stage reset. Tutors Ian Robinson (trumpet) and Chris Hibbard rounded up their young charges for a concert performance by the Little Big Band. Described as the Darlington and Durham Big Band, it is the feeder band from which the young musicians will, in due course, progress to the Durham County Youth Big Band.
Moondance got everyone in the groove before the ensemble took on a real challenge. My Funny Valentine is a tune for the experienced musician but believe it or not the budding musicians in the Little Big Band did themselves proud. Groove Pavement had a few unsuspecting talents thrust into the spotlight. The tutors pointing You! Yes. You! and up stepped a fledgling soloist to take a couple of bars or more. Terrified, maybe. Stars, every one of them! At precisely 6:50 pm there wasn’t a dry eye in the house (tent). In the audience a girl was celebrating her sixth birthday. She had given up her birthday party to hear the Little Big Band. Band and audience, led by Ian Robinson’s trumpet, played and sang Happy Birthday. A rollicking Bill Bailey concluded a great set.
