This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Mo Scott Quartet – The Jazz Café December 20

Well folks this is probably my last review this year… but it was a good gig to review.  Mo Scott is well known as a Jazz and Blues Singer and was accompanied by a smashing group of musicians, Pianist, Stuart Collingwood showed his style and superb ability, Neil Harland and his Bass really brought a something special to the night, and supported by the ever steady rhythm of Rob Walker on Drums… we only got to see a small section of his individuality but nevertheless is was worth seeing… more drum solos next time guys.  Anyway, as brevity is it seems a requirement of one reader of this blog, I will keep it short. 
The first set commenced with Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby, followed by Georgia on my Mind, Fever, and an upbeat Love For Sale.  All of Me had a nice instrumental start and end, and Mo then sang a bluesy Merry Christmas Baby, a Latin Unchain My Heart before a lovely slow version of If It’s the Last Thing I Do, before moving to the final number of the set, another blues number Blow Wind Blow.

The second set, was mainly blues, kicking off with Stop this World and I Wish I Knew How It Feels to be Free.  The band then showed their skills off as they did an exquisite instrumental Take the A Train.  Mo sang a thought provoking Somebody’s On My Mind, then continued with Oh Lord Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, Woman Be Wise, Mercy Mercy and Yellow Moon.  The final number certainly gave us a joyful end as we headed out to Take Your Kicks on Route 66.  Have a Happy Christmas Folks!
