This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Whitley Bay Classic Jazz Party @ Village Hotel, nr. Shiremoor. Day Two Afternoon Nov. 2

Daryl Sherman, Cécile McLorin Salvant (vcl); Andy Woon (tpt); Matthias Seuffert (reeds); Jeff Barnhart (pno); Henry Lemaire (gtr); Malcolm Sked (bs); Riohard Pite (dms).
Highlight of this afternoon's session was The Beguiling Lee Wiley. No, Jess Stacy's former wife hadn't been reincarnated then, yet again, maybe she had in the form of Daryl Sherman and Cécile McLorin Salvant! 
Daryl opened the innings with I've Got a Crush on You complete with verse then told us about Lee Wiley, her life, and the inspiration her music had had on her, before going into Oh Look at me Now.
Cécile stepped up for Easy To Love and Tea For Two done a la Wiley rather than O'Day! I had to pinch myself - surely I was dreaming! Could two such world class singers be sharing a stage in an hotel near Shiremoor? And, throughout the weekend, with musicians from at least seven different countries and with fans from even further afield! Perhaps the organisers should insert "international" into the title!
Daryl returned for Street of Dreams, again including the verse, and Cole Porter's little known Let's Fly Away. This latter number saw our girl's final chorus interspersed with some fancy, yet restrained, drum exchanges between Pite and Daryl.
Cécile gave us a beautiful I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues, Daryl countered with Fun to be Fooled and the two girls duetted on S'Wonderful with Daryl taking over on piano.
Needless to say, the band were superb - Barnhart is a Monster on piano! Andy Woon, Matthias and Lemaire (on guitar) excelled and Pite - perfection on percussion.
Cécile is charming and Daryl is delightful - who cares that it is raining outside!
