Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Rendezvous Jazz @ The Black Horse, Monkseaton. June 21.

Maureen Hall (vocals), Anon (clarinet & vocals), Don Fairley (trombone), Roy Gibson (piano & keyboars) & George Davidson (drums & vocals) + Teresa Armstrong (vocals) & John Broddle (vocals)
(Review by Russell).
Midsummer. A pint of Caledonian Sunseeker. Rendezvous Jazz played to a full house in Monkseaton. The band started late, bandleader Maureen Hall apologised for the delay - somehow or other Roy Gibson’s keyboards got lost en route. What to do? Make a start, improvise in the best possible fashion. Well, would you believe it? The Black Horse has its own piano. An upright, supposedly out of tune, pushed up against a wall was pressed into action. What a bonus, an acoustic piano rather than an electric piano! Maureen, shouldn't have apologised.
Anon (clarinet & vocals) sang When You’re Smiling and ace trombone man Don Fairley contributed the first of several mellifluous solos. Hall sang, clear as a bell, We Shall Walk Through the Streets of the City. This was C’est Magnifique, so said Anon, so said all. The interval saw a new beer on the bar from the VIP Brewery in Alnwick. A pint of Village something or other was palatable, the name eludes. One of the brewery’s other beers is Village Idiot, perhaps that’s the one for me!
The half time entertainment, as ever, featured songbird Teresa Armstrong and John Broddle. Second set, more of the same - good tunes, played and sung well by Hall, drummer George Davidson and Anon. The latter plays the most fluent clarinet post BG. The latter - Anon (at his request) – can be heard most weeks with the band…oops sorry Anon! Maureen and the boys can be heard every Friday lunchtime, one o’clock sharp (usually!) at the Black Horse, Monkseaton.
