This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Lewis West @ The Recital Room, Newcastle University. May 20, 2013

Newcastle University’s Stage 2 Music Student End of Year Recitals are in full swing and today’s busy schedule ended with drummer Lewis West up for examination. Last week’s Finals Recitals featured guitarist Mike Papapavlou with West in a supporting role, today the roles were reversed with guitarist Mike only too pleased to return the favour. The presence of five string electric bassist Ruairidh Patfield made for something of a reunion as the amiable Irishman was also in on Mike’s session.
West stood out front to introduce the first of two pieces (saying it was nice to play some jazz at last!) - Tony Williams’ solo on Moose the Mooche. No pressure there, then! Examiners ready to examine and West’s esteemed drum tutor Geoff Hutchinson in attendance,
West began confidently, glancing at the music on the stand. He must have rehearsed it a thousand times. He knew what he was doing. Mike and Ruairidh listened and right on cue entered the fray. Lewis and Mike kept the fireworks in the box, the examinee in the spotlight. Ruairidh was on the money from the off. The short examination (did it feel like an eternity to Lewis?) concluded with Miles’ Half Nelson. Now these guys played this at Mike’s recital last week, so this was a breeze! Note perfect? Maybe not. Could we see the joins? Maybe. No matter, this was great stuff - solos, fours, tight combo playing. I’m sure West will progress from this Stage 2 examination and it is to be hoped that we see - and hear - more of him on the local scene.
