Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Keith's Café @ Newcastle University Jan. 29.

The Newcastle University Jazz Orchestra: Josh Lane (flug); Tom Priestley (tpt); Jordan Alfonso (alt); Don Gillway (keys); Nick Loughlin (bs); Nathan Post (dms); Ella El-Salah (vcl).
(Review by Lance.)
The re-naming of the Arts Dept. Café to Keith's Café was a loving gesture to a man who was very much a part of Uni life - Crombie regularly handed Jazz Café fliers to students as they left the campus for lunch - becoming a legend in the process.
Tonight music students showed their appreciation with a spirited performance.
Ella El-Sahah proved to be well named with her interpretations of Angel Eyes, How High the Moon, Amy's Valerie, Midnight Train to Georgia and My Favourite Things - among others. Ella is imaginative and her voice has a touch of class - just like another Ella.
The trumpet and flugel front line produced a good sound but it was the arrival of altoist Alfonso that raised the bar on Night in Tunisia, Green Dolphin Street and Take Five. The rhythm section did the business and it was an enjoyable experience. Photos by Kaveh Emami.
Don Forbes Quartet: Don Forbes (tpt); Mike Papapavlou (gtr); Paul Grainger/Dave Parker (bs); Chris Finch (pno).
Jazz Café regulars Mike Papapavlou and Chris Finch worked out on All the Things You Are before being joined by Forbes and Grainger for a set that included Softly As In A Morning Sunrise, Come Rain or Come Shine, Stella by Starlight, There Will Never Be Another You/Keith, Straight No Chaser. and the highlight, for me, Monk's Dream.
An excellent evening that I'm sure would have made Keith feel very proud particularly during the re-naming ceremony..
