Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Swing from Paris - Quasimodo.

Andy Bowen, Andy Wood (gtrs); Fenner Curtis (vln); Steve Laming (bs); Jo Silver (vcl).
(Review by Lance).
The burning question is why? Why are there so many Hot Club style bands dotted, not just around the UK but in fact, around the world? At a guess, there's probably more Gypsy Swing groups than there are Glenn Miller ones. Well, they do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so it says much for the originals that just about every city in this country - let alone France and Belgium - has one or more such group. Which of course is great as the originators are long gone but of course the recorded legacy remains.

Quasimodo by Swing from Paris attempts to escape the stylistic straitjacket by including tunes by Charlie Parker (the title track), Night in Tunisia, Hot House, Concerto de Aranjuez and Spain. I Found a New Baby also has a bop theme by Wood to take it out. Guitar and violin solo well although at times I felt the intonation was slightly suspect - but close enough for jazz as the saying goes!. Jo Silver takes the Beryl Davis role on Undecided. and also sings Bei Mir Bist du Schoen.
By and large they succeed and this disc will provide a worthy memento for anyone who's enjoyed one of their live performance (Quasimodo are available for Weddings, Corporate events, Private engagements, Festivals, clubs and pubs.)
Swing from Paris: Quasimodo is launched on Sept. 7 at: .

The launch party for our brand new album, ‘Quasimodo’! We’ll be performing the album live, and every CD purchased comes with a free pint. Live music, great beer, and entry is free. What more could you want?

Now that's what I call an album launch - pity Stroud is so far away!
Lance.
