The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: The Dominic J. Marshall Trio - Icaros.

Dominic J. Marshall (pno); Tobias Nijboer (bs); Kaspars Kurdeko (dms).
(Review by Lance.)
Why?, I ask myself, haven't I heard, or even heard of, Dominic J. Marshall before now. A product of that mega musical maelstrom that is Leeds College of Music, where he arrived via the Alan Hawkshaw Scholarship route, Marshall went on to win the prestigious LCM Piano Prize.
From Leeds he re-located to Amsterdam which probably explains why he slipped off my radar. The loss is mine.
Fortunately, this, his second CD, redresses the balance.
Ten self-penned compositions reveal a pianist/composer well-versed in contemporary sounds whilst at the same time retaining all the core essentials of the jazz tradition - not least a sense of romanticism. This is beautifully displayed in Ojos De La Pastora where he bears his soul in composition and probing improvisations.
The moods change with each track and, frequently within the track. Drifting, swinging, reflective, hard hitting, helped along by Latvian Kurdeko's intuitive drumming and the complementing bass-lines of Amsterdam's Nijboer.
The trio have been compared with EST, which is no small comparison, but the truth is they have an original voice that owes nothing to anyone but themselves!

The Dominic J. Marshall Trio - Icaros is due for release in September on the F-IRE Label..

Lance - I see you know of the Alan Hawkshaw Scholarship at Leeds. You may remember I told you of my acquaintance with Alan when working on the same Signals Watch at RAF Ayios Nicholaos, Cyprus during the 56 - 58 Years. He was a Leeds lad and a great pianist then even tho' we acquired a sunburnt Winnie Atwell replica. He could really make that talk and inject much of his Yorkshire humour. I actually have an old photograph with him on that old worn out keyboard. He was very popular and entertaining as you can imagine. Thanks for introducing me
to Dominic J. Marshall from that Leeds School of Music. I really enjoy what I hear and see on Youtube and must explore more of this musicians
compositions.
