This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Customs House Big Band Open Rehearsal New Crown Hotel South Shields Tuesday Feb. 7.

Baby it was cold outside but the temperature inside the New Crown was tropical as usual! Coming in from the cold we heard a work out on Benny Golson's Whisper Not and, a new to me, Gordon Goodwin's Hunting With Wabbits, it appeared that the sax section's fingers never left their hands but at that speed I couldn't swear to it.
The concert set, sans Ruth Lambert, kicked off with Blue Bossa followed by a Mike Gilbey arrangement of My Foolish Heart featuring Michael Lamb on the poor man's flugel horn (trumpet with bucket mute). Nestico's laid back arrangement of On The Sunny Side Of The Street followed and then we were On Green Dolphin Street. Kevin Eland soloed on a tune called Blue and had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up (does anyone want to have my trumpet before I put it on ebay?) the set was rounded off with Killer Joe. In the old jive parlance the night was a “killer diller”. The band goes from strength to strength, all the soloists are good and the section work first class. This band are not to be missed by any lover of big band music.
Their next gigs are March 3  at Sunderland, March 6 open rehearsal South Shields, March 8 Blaydon Jazz Club and March 30 at the Customs House, get there.
