Hil, I noticed this really good version of the song as well. It was a nice change from the usual flowing folky version that I listen to - Judy Collins I think. I believe the song was written originally for a particular singer with a very small vocal range.

Yes Ann that is correct, it was written by my hero Stephen Sondheim for Glynis Johns for her role of Desiréé in " A little night music" She had a limited range. In a later production at the Olivier Theatre Judi Dench took this part, which of course was an ideal vehicle for her as she is not a singer, but like Glynis Johns had the acting experience & the charisma for this important role
