Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Remembering Malcolm Saul

It's hard to believe that it was 20 (21 - see comments) years ago today that pianist Malcolm Saul left us - a void still felt in local jazz circles.
Malcolm was the automatic first choice when it came to accompanying visiting American stars such as Lockjaw Davis, Al Cohn, Joe Newman and his all-round ability enabled him to fit in with any band in any style. Malcolm's daughter Janet brought his anniversary to our attention on Facebook and I know that all who knew him or heard him play will want to share their sadness with her.
Janet - Malcolm will never be forgotten.

Sorry Lance to correct you but it was 25th Nov 1989 that Mal died.
He was a great friend to Mike and I.
Unfortunately Mike is still very ill in Wd 2, North Tyneside General Hospital.

Ok - my apologies. I took the date from the original thread posted a year ago (see link on site).
Best to Mike.

No one will ever forget Malcolm - he was mentioned at Mike Gilby's funeral today.
Two great musicians who will live forever in our memories.

Hi,I googled Malcolm just on the off chance something might be there. Malcolm's mother Winnie was my aunt. My mother Ruby, Winnie's sister, also played the piano and I remember her telling me how Malcolm as a small boy would stand by the piano watching her play, I remember all his family were musical.
