This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Horn Dogs are Top Dogs @ The Bridge

I made my way from North Shields to Newcastle by Metro wondering what could follow No Time For Jive. Newcastle football fans must have been wondering what could follow their 5-1 thrashing of ten man Sunderland and the streets were awash with black and white shirts.
The stage of the Bridge Hotel was also awash with shirts - red ones - as Horn Dogs opened up with a rather irreverent version of What A Friend We Have In Jesus before upping the tempo and stomping off to New Orleans. Not bad going - Chicago to New Orleans by Metro!
Yes New Orleans it is but not the New Orleans of yore. This is the Crescent City of today, the Big Easy, and the name of the game is fun.
The rhythm section sway as they play, the trumpets soar, the lone sax holds his own and the trombones provide the depth.
Talking trombones - I mentioned a promising young guy at last weeks Jazz Café jam session. The same young man made his debut with the band tonight. In the space of a week his talent has multiplied! David Gray - remember you read it here first.
