Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

DELANEY's DELIGHT - THE JAZZ ESQUIRES @ THE PORTHOLE

Miles Watson (tpt/vcl), Doug Fielder (alt), Tony Winder (ten), Robin Douthwaite (gtr), Roy Gibson (pno), Laurie Brown (vibes), Stan Nicholson (bs), Ray Walker (?) (dms). + Colin Johnstone (pno), Teresa Armstrong (vcl), Dave Bosomworth (vcl), Eric Delaney (dms).
I don't get to the Porthole as often as I'd like to - domestic circumstances preclude it - however, when a jazz legend such as drummer Eric Delaney rings you up and asks where the action is - the Porthole's the only game in town (on a Wednesday in Shields (North)) and I was pleased to be able to arrange it!
It was a great afternoon with the Jazz Esquires playing some nice arrangements of standards such as S'Wonderful, Jersey Bounce, Dream, C Jam Blues etc. Laurie on vibes added the Hampton touch whilst Miles provided some Buck Clayton like trumpet work - don't take my word for it I overheard someone saying he plays like Buck...
Eric enjoyed it and eventually  was persuaded to sit in for a couple of numbers. Dispensing with the kit and using only the snare drum he sat down front and played Cute and Bernie's Tune. Immaculate brushwork from a guy, 86 next month, who can still compete. Miles, incidentally, upon Eric's insistence, blew a nice muted Harry James-like solo.
Vocals from Teresa  and Dave Bosomworth - the Yorkshire Sinatra. Dave sang It Had To Be You.
A most enjoyable couple of hours with a great guy and some excellent music to complement it.
Also enjoyed the company of Eric's friends Eileen, June, Gillian and Alan.
A nice touch at the end was playing some tracks from a CD of the old Delaney Band from the 1950s.

What a thrill, saw Eric many times at the Sunday night band shows at the York "Rialto" owned by Jack Prendergast, father of Barry aka John Barry
