A new venue (new to BSH), a new album, a sold out concert performance. All on a dank bank holiday afternoon down at the coast. Tom Waits for No Man were in town and, so it seemed, every member of Lindsay Hannon's large fan club.
The new album - Neckties and Boxing Gloves - would be played in its entirety, wouldn't it? Wrong! In a move that wrong-footed your reviewer and probably everyone else on the premises, Lindsay chose to play just one number from the album, instead opting to play numbers from Tom Waits' extensive back catalogue.
Oxygenic, on Whitley Road, hosted the album launch gig. Entering the low light level gig room, Gregorian chant, or similar, boomed out of arena-sized speaker cabinets. At the three o'clock start, every seat was occupied with a couple of dozen standing. From the opening number (Innocent When You Dream) Lindsay had them in the palm of her hand. In fine fettle, Lindsay punctuated the performance with a somewhat novel quiz. Asking Tom Waits' related questions, fans of the man's music piped up with their answers. Those answering correctly were awarded a prize...a chocolate Jesus*, make that a Chocolate Jesus. Those who know Waits' music will get the reference!
Lindsay (vocals and bonhomie), pianist Alan Law, bassist Paul Grainger and percussion marvel Brendan Murphy (old boot and spanner), were clearly enjoying themselves. Walk Away, Temptation and, from the new album, Heartattack and Vine, were but three selections in the one hour set. Tom Waits for No Man will be out and about over the coming weeks and months.
