Bebop Spoken There

Melissa Aldana: ''Having to play a ballads album, which is something very revealing for a saxophone player, would help me to question some new aspects of how to go deeper into sound." (DownBeat May, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sam Lightwing Quintet @ the Moor Club, Stockport

© Jeff Pritchard
Sam Lightwing (alto/tenor sax); Will Bird (trumpet, flugelhorn); Ethan Gillespie (piano); Pete Hartley (bass); Callum Montgomery (drums)

The band, which featured a frontline of Sam Lightwing on alto and tenor sax and Will Bird on trumpet and flugelhorn, played a mix of older material by Rollins and Clifford Brown alongside more recent tunes from Roy Hargrove's 2008 album Earfood  which gave both horns a chance to show off their blossoming talent. Will Bird on trumpet was very impressive on what was his debut performance at The Moor Club.

They were ably assisted by Ethan Gillespie on piano, Pete Hartley on bass and drummer Callum Montgomery who inspite of not using tom toms, still managed to build up enough intensity to drive things along in a swinging manner. The rhythm section were featured on Sam's funky arrangement of My Favorite Things and Sam Cooke's Bring It On Home To Me. It was great for me to hear two horns in unison which is fairly rare on most gigs probably because of the extra cost and I really enjoyed this line-up.

NB this gig was supported by New Northern a branch of Jazz North which promotes emerging talent. New Northern's representative Helena Summerfield and Paul Hartley from Stockport Jazz were both in attendance.

Next Sunday features the Grant Russell Quartet. Jeff Pritchard

I'm Not So Sure; Daahoud; Joy is Sorrow Unmasked; My Favorite Things; Sandu; Pent Up House; Bring it on Home to me; Star Eyes; Sing a Song a Song; Get Happy.
