This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Wilma Baan - Look at me Now

It was back in 2021 when Baan sent me into orbit with her first album - So Nice - an album which went on to be one of my top vocal albums of 2021.

Look at me Now is up there in that league. Baan's interpretation of a song, whether old or new creates the feeling that you're hearing it for the first time. The Dutch singer gets into the lyric adding her own inflections, maybe an ever so slight suggestion of Dinah Washington or Pearl Bailey, playing around with the phrasing in a way that only the very best can get away with. She gets away with it!

The fact that Claire Martin OBE produced the album speaks volumes and, coupled with the trio - pianist Harvey did the arrangements - and contributions by Price, Steele, McMillan and Banks. make this as close to perfection as any vocal album since Ella's songbooks.

The actual release date is July 28 with the album launch on July 31 at Pizza Express - I must check out what strike actions are planned by the 'comrades' for that weekend!
