This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Newcastle Jazz Festival (Day 3) Saturday August 20

The third day of this year's Newcastle Jazz Festival takes place at Tyne Bank Brewery. The action gets under way at half past one and continues 'til sometime after nine o'clock in the evening. First up at 1:30 is Pete Tanton's Riviera Effect (Lloyd Wright, guitar, John Bradford, drums). Ex-pat American trumpeter Tanton mines a rich post-Chet Baker seam of sun-dappled French (Tyneside!) Riviera sounds.  

At 3:50 it's the turn of Alter Ego. Hard bop, Blakey-inspired, accomplished original compositions, the Tyneside/Tyne Valley-based sextet always puts on a great show. The front line - Keith Robinson, reeds, Niall Armstrong, reeds, Dave Hignett, trumpet/flugelhorn - supported by guitarist Joe Steels, depping bassist Michael Whent and drummer David Johnson will be a big hit, that's for sure.

Trumpeter Graham Hardy playing the music of Miles Davis is something to savour. At 5:00pm Hardy's quartet - Ben Lawrence, piano, John Pope, bass, and drummer Rob Walker - will be exploring the legacy of Miles Dewey Davis. 

At quarter past six be sure to bag a seat to hear Jo Harrop and Jamie McCredie. London-based vocalist Jo, from County Durham, and guitarist Jamie, originally from Tyneside, also based in London, are set to be one of the festival's star attractions. Their duo album Weathering the Storm won universal acclaim, one critic describing the recording as 'perfect'. Jo is currently enjoying chart success in America and Jamie continues to perform across the globe. 

Ivo Neame closes the third day of the 2022 Newcastle Jazz Festival. At 7:45 pianist Neame takes to the stage with his quartet featuring George Crowley, sax, Tom Farmer, bass, and James Maddren, drums. Neame (Phronesis, Marius Neset), is professor of jazz piano at the Guildhall and there's little doubt that his quartet will draw a large crowd to Tyne Bank Brewery to hear selections from Glimpses of Truth (Whirlwind Recordings, 2021).
