Described as both an exploration of the seven major scale modes and a meditation on the mystical world of dreaming, John Garner's fifth solo album is a profoundly personal record of his musical and spiritual journey thus far.
Joined by a trio of joyfully expressive percussionists: Flo Rosset, Dave Walsh and Alok Verma along with illustrator Michael Goodson, a longtime collaborator of John's who has once again created a poignant visual counterpoint to the sound world of Seventh Dream, the end product is indeed one of meditation and mystical dreaming.
It took me a while to come to terms with what I was hearing. At times the violin sounded like a soprano sax or some eastern wind instrument. No doubt a lot of digital jiggery-pokery went into the production but, upon reflection, it was worth the effort to appreciate the sheer imaginative vision of the composer.
Whether music students will find modal enlightenment from the seven tracks remains to be seen but I rather think that with repeated and diligent listening they will.
