This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Paul Hartley Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - July 12

Following a great weekend down south at the Swanage Jazz Festival I was recovering on Monday after a long drive home but the next day I was ready for my regular trip to the Railway to hear more modern jazz. In spite of the hot weather there was a reasonable turnout and the show commenced at 9pm with that bebop number based on the chords of Whispering which Dizzy Gillespie called Groovin’ High.  This was followed by an interesting work out on Willow Weep For Me which was done in 6/8 time with Hartley’s guitar alluding to the Miles Davis composition All Blues.


Phil did a nice version of the Bob Haggart standard What's New? - a number that seems to have gone out of fashion in jazz clubs recently. He also played a couple of Tom Harrell’s originals, a Horace Silver tune, and showed he knew his way around rhythm changes on a fast version of The Theme. The show concluded with that classic Sonny Rollins blues Sonnymoon for Two. 


I was well satisfied with tonight's performance and so were all the other people in the room judging by their applause. 


The next jazz event at the Railway will be this Sunday July 17 with the Freddie Garner Quartet. Mike Farmer
