This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Greg Abate Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - July 24

Although the outside temperature had some what cooled down, inside the Railway things were getting hotter by the minute as Greg Abate opened up with his version of Johnny Mercer’s I Remember You. This went down well with the audience and I dare say there were a quite a few present who  remembered Frank Ifield having a big hit with the same tune. Greg played mostly alto sax but he gave his flute an airing on the Sonny Rollins' Latin flavoured number St Thomas and also in the second set when he did a great version of Angel Eyes. A tune that he likes to feature in his shows is that beautiful Lee Morgan composition Ceora and his rendition was perfect as always.

Paul Hartley’s trio did an excellent job of backing Greg and all three musicians got plenty of solo space. One tune that turned the spotlight on Ken Marley was Charlie Parker’s Moose the Moose and he impressed everyone with his agile basswork.


The closing number was a tune that I’ve not heard for a while, That’s All, bringing another great evening of modern jazz at the Railway to a close.


On Tuesday July 26 Greg will be at Graham Brook’s new venue in Morley Green Club playing with Dave Newton in a duo setting. The next jazz night at the Railway is also on Tuesday July 26 and is the Mike Hall Quartet.
