This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Frank Griffith Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - May 8

Once again it was good to see the house piano being put to good use by a visiting musician. Howard Britz, who was part of Frank’s quartet tonight, originally from London, but now residing in Brooklyn  after having moved to the States in 1991 to take up a full scholarship at Berklee. He moved to Philadelphia in 1996 and, in 1998, moved to New York where he became known as a composer, pianist and also a first class bass player.

We also heard, for the first time at the Railway, an excellent drummer in Victor Norberg who has been playing mainly in the Liverpool area for the past eight or so years. Ed Harrison was his usual rock solid self on bass and his solos went down well with the audience.  


One of tonight 's many highlights  was the trio’s rendition of the Bronislaw Kaper composition Invitation  a tune often associated with tenor legend Joe Henderson. 


Frank opened the show with Tangerine and his sound had a Sonny Rollins influence that had no need for amplification. The superb acoustics here are often remarked on by the many musicians who play at this venue.


Another number I liked was the Latin flavoured My Little Suede Shoes which had Frank playing clarinet and this reminded me of one of the first CDs I bought - To Bird With Love by Eddie Daniels which had a great version of this tune. Also I enjoyed Frank’s solo on the Erroll Garner ballad Misty a tune that I never tire of hearing.


The next jazz night at the Railway is Tuesday May 10 with the Paul Hartley Quartet featuring Rod Mason. Mike Farmer
