This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Matt Gordy, Jazz Tonite Sextet- Be With Me

Matt Gordy (drums, arrangements); Chris Colangelo (basses); Ido Meshulam (trombones); Alan Pasqua (piano); Jeff Ellwood (sax); Ron Stout (trumpet, flugel); Sherry Williams (vocals).

A not unpleasant album that, whilst it doesn't attempt to push any boundaries (thank God!), is nonetheless, very listenable.

It had been sequestering in my intray since January, buried among the daily avalanche of CDs that are slowly, but surely, driving me to distraction before I closed my eyes and made a random selection.

It wasn't a bad choice. Some lyrical playing by Stout, impressive solos by Ellwood with Pasqua's piano excursions outstanding. Likewise, Meshulam's solos on both slide and valve trombone offer tonal variety and Williams' vocals add an extra dimension to Be With Me and Sunny. But, at the end of the day, with more and more albums flooding an ever diminishing market place, it's difficult to suggest that this is the one to blow your mad money on although, in truth, you could do worse.
