This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. R.I.P. Zbigniew Namyslowski

Polish alto saxist Zbigniew Namyslowski who died on Monday (Feb. 7) has been the subject of many BSH posts mainly based around the legendary gig he played at Newcastle's New Orleans Club back in the 1960s and a Decca LP - Lola - issued around the same time (1964).

I missed the session at the New Orleans Club but I have a tape of the album which told me in no uncertain terms just what I had missed. To describe Zbigniew Namyslowski as the best ever modern jazz alto sax player to emerge from mainland Europe would be no exaggeration - he was simply the best - and, reading his obituary in the Syncopated Times (link below), he could also play Dixieland trombone.

A man for all seasons who will be sadly missed - Zbigniew Namyslowski was 82. Lance

Sad news about Namyslowski who played Manchester in 1964 and I went to check him out, not expecting much but he proved to be an awesome player. On a trip to Paris I saw him with Ted Curzpn's quintet at the Chat Qui Peche and he was cooking up a storm together with the backing of George Avanitas trio.
