This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Parlor Entertainments Harlem - Feb. 20

Marjorie Eliot (piano); Rudel Drears (piano, vocals), Nick Mauro (trumpet); Sedric Shukroon (clarinet, flute)

Three thirty Sundays, come rain, shine or pandemic, Marjorie Eliot opens her apartment to visitors from all over the globe. Pianist Eliot has been doing so since 1993, never missing a week. This afternoon/evening two guests dropped by.

A full house, everyone (musicians included) donning a face covering, the jazz ranged from twenties' material to Monk and beyond. Eliot's son Rudel Drears appears to be a larger than life character, he's the Monk man in the household at 555 Edgecombe Avenue, sharing piano duties with Eliot as they play a solo piano piece or accompany their guests. Trumpeter Nick Mauro and Sedric Shukroon (clarinet) took to the stand to play a selection of standards (Take the A Train, Lover, Come Back to Me) and bop material, the attentive audience respectful of their efforts. 

Refreshments were offered, a collection bucket proffered and filled with donations of the folding stuff. Today's concert drew to a close with a spirited When the Saints Go Marching In. Some NYC travel guides list the Big Apple's hidden gems, if Marjorie Eliot's 'open house' isn't included, a revised edition is in order.
