Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Live from Emmet's Place (Vol. 79) - Dec 20

Emmet Cohen (piano); Tyler Mitchell (double bass); Evan Sherman (drums); Vujo Sotashe (vocals); Grant Stewart (tenor sax)

Emmet Cohen continues to stream gigs from his New York City apartment despite resuming a touring schedule either side of the Atlantic. Monday evening chalked up volume 79 in the pianist's ongoing series. Joining Cohen this evening, bassist Tyler Mitchell (Sun Ra, Spike Wilner) and drummer Evan Sherman (established on the NYC scene and he's not yet thirty years of age). Two guests would join the trio - tenor saxophonist Grant Stewart, and vocalist Vujo Sotashe.

Cohen's trio warmed up with two or three numbers, beginning with Dear Old Stockholm. As ever, sensational piano playing supported by two of the finest musicians around. It is difficult to overstate just how good these weekly steams are. A piano trio stream would have been just fine, the addition of a guest or two simply put the icing on the Christmas cake. Grant Stewart is a stalwart of the Big Apple jazz circuit: a technique as cast iron as any tenor player, delivering a considered reading of the material, a joy to listen to, both as a soloist and as an accompanist, on this occasion in support to a new name to BSH, Vujo Sotashe.

South African born, NYC resident, Sotashe is a tenor voice with an amazing range, in classical music circles he would probably be described as a countertenor. Whatever the classification, Sotashe is an astonishing talent. Stardust, with Stewart's impeccable accompaniment, Ruby, My Dear to The Christmas Song, thoughts turned to when the man will be heard this side of the Pond. If he ain't comin over anytime soon, a trip to NYC to hear Sotashe sounds like a plan.
Check out Emmet Cohen's online gigs, they're readily accessible on YouTube. Choosing one in particular, Live from Emmet's Place, vol. 67 (23 August 2021) featuring Samara Joy would be a good introduction! Russell
