This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Off Key Big Band @ St Oswald's Church, Hebburn.

I can't remember the last time I heard a big band concert in Hebburn so tonight's performance in St Oswald's Church by the Off Key Big Band was, I suppose, a first.
They're a relatively new band who hold a weekly rehearsal in the church and I think it's fair to say they are still finding their feet. However, their enthusiasm is infectious and they totally captivated the audience who were "of a certain age."
The program was very Glenn Miller orientated although the two girl singers, Joanne Kanser and Abbie Stewart, did offer a more contemporary approach. Stephen Fay went down the Sinatra, Bublé, Darin route but his gags were lost for many in the cavernous interior of the church.
Featured soloists included John Gilderoy (trumpet); Bethany Sanderson (clarinet); Simon Sheard (alto); Amy Swann (flugel) and Battler Britton (tenor). Musical Director was John S.Fay.
Highlight of the evening for most of the audience was the Wartime sing-along done with such patriotic fervour that I wondered if perhaps the German football team were planning to invade St James Park!
A pleasant evening with a sumptuous buffet provided during the interval.

Yes I was at the Off Key Concert on Saturday at St Oswalds Church (But Not "Of a Certain Age!") It was a great night with a well balanced show.
It is good for a church to be used for other than services and you must admit the show was well supported.
As you say it was an excellent buffet (and what only £4-00?)
Tell me where in Newcastle can you get that?
