Bebop Spoken There

Melissa Aldana: ''Having to play a ballads album, which is something very revealing for a saxophone player, would help me to question some new aspects of how to go deeper into sound." (DownBeat May, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Waitiki 7 - Exotica Reborn: In Studio and Live at House Without a Key

Tim Mayer (sax, flute); Zaccai Curtis (piano); Helen Liu (violin); Jim Benoit (vibess); Randy Wong (bass); Abe Lagrimas  Jr. (drums); Augie "Lopaka" Colon Jr. (perc., bird calls) + Galliard String Quartet* (tks 2, 4, 5, 12); Mika Mimura (marimba tks 3, 6); Harold Chang (drums tk 6)

I must confess I hadn't realised there was a genre known as Exotica although a lot of the tunes did sound familiar. However, there must have been otherwise it couldn't have been reborn as the album title claims.

Perhaps if I'd spent my youth lying on the beach at Waitiki instead of the golden sands of South Shields my education would have been much improved and I'd have got a tan or, more likely, had sand kicked in my face.

As you've probably gathered, Exotica  was popular in Hawaii and the South Pacific in the post WWII years and is a mix of several genres such as Latin, jazz and lounge music ultimately culminating in the easy listening format.

To leave it at that would be unfair as although, at times, it can come across  as bland there are often pulsating rhythms that have the edge on many a bossa and most cha-cha-chas. And when the chips are down there's excitement to spare in Curtis' piano solos, Benoit's vibes. and Mayer's excursions on flute and sax.

The first six tracks were conceived in a studio whilst the remaining seven were live at the House Without a Key which was also the title of Earl Derr Bigger's first novel featuring fictional detective Charlie Chan.

An album well worth investigating. Lance
