The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Munch Manship Quartet @ the Moor Club, Stockport - August 31

Good to see things  back to normal after a five week break and who better to re-start the jazz activities than Munch and his bunch of very experienced musicians? 

The first set opener was a Harold Arlen number I wish I Knew and this was followed by a tune that became popular when Sonny Rollins featured it on his iconic album The Bridge. I've heard Munch play Without a Song many times and this rendition of the Vincent Yeomans composition was as good as any I've heard apart from Sonny's. To close the first set the flute was chosen for Roland Kirk's Serenade to a Cuckoo and this evoked memories of hearing Kirk live at various venues when he toured throughout the north west, sometimes with his own band.


We heard more from Munch and his flute during a very Latinish Speak Low and Alice in Wonderland which both also featured plenty of solos from the rhythm section. 

The final number was Hank Mobley's  wonderful tune from his Blue Note Album Soul Station. This I Dig of You which is a number that every tenor player has to grapple with sooner or later. Everyone was blowing at full steam ahead and the audience seemed well satisfied with this evening's performance. 

More interesting gigs are in the pipeline and next Sunday, Sept. 7, Richard Iles and his band Heaton Deluxe will be onstage 8:00-10:oopm. £5 entry.
