This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: The (Jazz) Police on BBC 4 (Friday)

On Friday evening (Feb. 3) BBC 4 presents four hours and twenty minutes of Sting, Andy and Stewart. The Police, as they were known, took the world by storm, seemingly in no time going from small venue gigs to rock star stadium concert performances. Gordon Sumner (aka Sting) hails from the BSH heartland. The Newcastle Big Band and Last Exit (an extraordinarily popular band on Tyneside) served as Sting's musical apprenticeship. Our man moved to London and the rest, as they say, is history.

At 9:00pm The Police: Rock Goes to College (first broadcast in 1979) captures the boys in their pomp (Sting belting out Roxanne). At 9:40pm On Drums: Stewart Copeland is all about drums and drummers (it's a repeat but well worth watching again) and at 10:40pm The Police in the East: Old Grey Whistle Test follows the trio on a 1980 tour of Japan, Hong Kong, India, Egypt and Greece. Annie Nightingale accompanied the trio, an arduous gig but someone had to do it...
