Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

R I P Oliver ‘Ollie’ Soden

Local pianist and drummer, Oliver ‘Ollie’ Soden, passed away peacefully in the early hours of this morning (Nov. 6) surrounded by close family including his son, string bass player, Cliff Soden.

Over the years, Ollie was a regular on drums or piano with various local bands including the Rae Brothers New Orleans Jazz Band, the Mississippi Dreamboats, the Vieux Carré Jazzmen and Brian Carrick’s Heritage Hall Stompers.

Funeral details to be announced shortly. R.I.P. Ollie.

NOTE:

Pic’s taken in the late 1980s? Ollie Soden drums; Mac Rae trumpet; Brian Bennett banjo & Nicky Telfer tenor sax.

I think it was a Brian Carrick gig which he seldom attended at that time as he was usually away 'on the road'.

It was a Sunday afternoon session. Can’t remember what the venue was called but it was either at the top of the Bigg Market - in which case it was probably what used to be THE ROYAL COURT GRILL - or maybe it was at the top of Grey Street?

You entered at street level then went down a few flights of stairs to the basement area where we played. Maybe you can enlighten me?  Brian Bennett.

The City Vaults. That’s it! I remember it as a Bigg Market ‘dive bar’ back in the 1960’s when it was called ‘The Royal Court Grill’ - a true misnomer for sure, it was in fact a notorious roughhouse.
