Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Chris Hodgkins International Quartet - Festooned With Trumpets

Chris Hodgkins (trumpet); Jinjoo Yoo (piano); Wayne  Wilkinson (guitar); Alison Rayner (bass).

A delightful vignette from 2019 by an Anglo/American quartet led by Chris Hodgkins that opens with an original Latin number composed by Hodgkins and Diane McLoughlin - the title track, Festooned With Trumpets

Body and Soul features South Korean, NYC domiciled pianist, Jinjoo Yoo whom I've raved over on previous recordings and here her name can be said to sit proudly and justifiably alongside the many great names associated with this tune.

Almost Like Being in Love swings along nicely with all four soloing effectively.

Rayner's intriguely titled  Two Hats and a Paper Bag has Jinjoo once again strongly featured alongside Wilkinson as well as there being a strong presence from the composer herself .

Angel Eyes sees Hodgkins tightly muted à la Miles or Sweets Edison albeit not as clichéd as the latter.

Martino's Waltz is Wilkinson's homage to fellow guitarist the late Pat Martino. He captures the moment as do Jinjoo and Alison.

I Guess I'll Have to Change my Plan brings the leader back on board with a cool, laid back, relatively straight reading of the tune - piano and guitar providing the twiddly bits in between the bookends.

Everybody Knows comes from the fertile imagination of Johnny Hodges - guitar and bass the soloists.

I've Never Been in Love Before has, some spritely blowing by Hodgkins, Jinjoo chips in with a fine solo followed by Wilkinson's equally impressive chorus.

Wilkinson was obviously on a roll going by the gems he mined from In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning.

Flying Home was just that - all four - well at least two were - flying home after a pre-pandemic UK tour and leaving in fine style. Even though there was no clarinet, the feeling on this last track was very much that of a Goodman small group.

Well worth checking out - Lance
