This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Groovetrain @ Hoochie Coochie - March 13

Michael Lavery (vocals/guitar); Angela Newbrook, Steph ? (vocals); James Peacock (keys); Mitch Laddie (guitar/vocals); John Dawson (bass guitar); Ian Halford (drums/vocals); Si King (perc.); Danny Allan (saxes; David Gray (trombone); Ross Laing (trumpet).

You don't get many hairy bikers in Hoochie - at least not on stage - but tonight there was one in the form of percussionist Si King who, for a change, did his cooking on congas to the approval of a bursting at the seams Coochie.

Yes sir, Groovetrain were right on track for an early evening's helping of funk and soul and rollin' rock. This was Detroit, Chicago, Philly and downtown Byker on Pilgrim St!

Tightly rehearsed it may well be but when Mitch Laddie cuts loose freedom reigns - he even takes time out to sing falsetto! Lead singer Lavery shares the vocals with drummer Halford whilst Angela and Steph not only add their own distinctive voices but provide great harmonies.

The jazz element emerges when Danny Allan sizzles on saxophones alto or tenor and 'Showtime' Gray slides forth. The groove is provided by James Peacock who gets some crazy B3 sounds out of the keyboard and the solid bass of JD. Ross Laing rounded off the horn section with a powerful lead.
