This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Not the Steve Oakes Quartet @ The Railway, Stockport – Sept. 7

Unfortunately, due to illness, Steve Oakes could not appear and also the featured guest Jim Collins on tenor sax was a no-show for the same reason. However, local pianist Freddy Garner was called upon to fill in for Oakes and saxman Ed Kainyak was on hand to play a major part in the proceedings. Tim Franks was on drums and I was pleased to see Gavin Barras was there with his bass.

All these musicians have played together on many occasions so it was just a question of deciding what tunes to play and at 9:00 pm the concert commenced. The opening number was that well known theme by Bronislaw Capers, On Green Dolphin Street.

Ed played his Yamaha tenor on all the tunes and has a sound that made me think of Teddy Edwards - a great somewhat under-appreciated saxist that I’ve been listening to recently. Freddy Garner is always a treat to hear and he really excelled on Kenny Barron’s Voyage.  Gavin Barras gets a wonderful tone on bass and Tim Franks deserves a mention for keeping it all together.

The next show at the Railway is the Suzanne Fonseca Quartet on Sept. 12 – Mike Farmer
