This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) The FT4 set to reconvene

This Tuesday (Jan 9) the Francis Tulip Quartet will resume its 2017/2018 tour in Hexham. The Fox on West End Terrace is home to Hexham Jazz Club and the appearance by Francis Tulip and ‘the lads’ will make more than a few sit up and take notice. Advertised variously as a 7:30pm, 8:00pm, 9:00pm start, the first set is scheduled to get underway at 8:30pm. Best seats are at a premium so arriving a little earlier, say eight o’clock, isn’t a bad idea. Birmingham Conservatoire guitar student Tulip will be in the company of pianist Joel Brown, Guildhall bassist Michael Dunlop, and drummer Matt MacKellar, currently ‘on vacation’ from Berklee, Boston, USA. It’s free admission, a donation would be appreciated and you’ll be helping sustain the regional jazz economy.
The Francis Tulip Quartet’s set list is likely to encompass a GASbook standard or two together with a few paint stripping bop and post-bop charts. The FT4’s final gig of the tour sees them calling in at the award-winning Quakerhouse pub in Mechanics’ Yard, Darlington on Sunday, Jan 14. A nominal admission charge will apply and it’s worth every penny (or cent in Matt’s case!). The first set begins at 6:00pm, there will be an interval raffle (it’s the jazz economy), and they’ll be done and dusted by eight o’clock unless they win an encore…and they will!
