This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. GIJF Day 3: Paul Edis (Solo piano) @ Sage Gateshead - April 2

Ms Alex is absolutely right, it's the concourse which turns a series of concerts into a festival, and what better way is there to arrive than in the presence of his lordship himself?
Most pianists just do their thing and, if the audience don't get it, that's their fault for being philistines. Not so Lord Paul who knows he's there to entertain as well as educate and has developed into a real master, comfortable, warm and witty in his announcements and in his choice of music.
A full concourse found me sat, table-less, in the corner for a selection from his double-CD solo piano album and some Gershwin thrown in. The omission of Vignette will inevitably disappoint, but I totally get he doesn't want to wheel it out each time, and it's the cross he must bear for creating a masterpiece which can stand with any name you can think of.
He's such an unassuming presence, it's easy to forget what an all-rounder he is, putting tasteful musicality ahead of showing off so that when the music requires it, he can throw a torrent of notes at you which takes your breath away.
An English Country Garden and Greensleeves had people of all ages, passers-by and Jazz geeks, beaming all over their faces.

Wonderful piano player. We loved every minute of Paul's performance. Our table gave him a well deserved standing ovation. Pity some folks missed it. Although everyone just walking through stopped in their tracks.
