Perdido Street Jazzmen @ Darlington Market Place - Sept. 24

Frank Brooker (clarinet, tenor sax, vocals); Eugene Farrar (trombone, vocals); Brian Bennett (banjo); Phil Rutherford (sousaphone)

I Can't Give You Anything But Love on a beautiful sunny September morning. Yes, morning! Darlington Borough Council continues to support cultural events as we slowly emerge from the dark days of the pandemic and this early bird session presented an on-street session by the Perdido Street Jazzmen.

Trombonist Eugene Farrar shared vocal duties with veteran reedsman Frank Brooker, today playing clarinet and tenor sax. When You're SmilingOn the Sunny Side of the Street...the Perdido Street guys really were on the sunny side. It's always like this in Darlington!

All of Me featured Farrar's vocals and the first of several sets drew to a close with Bei Mir Bist du Schön. Following a short break the Perdido Street Jazzmen would wander up to Duke Street to play a second set. Your correspondent wandered up to the station to catch a train to Durham to arrive in time for Sue Ferris' lunchtime concert at the Gala Theatre. Russell

I missed the first set but followed the band up Duke Street where the short programme included When you wore a tulip, Shine and The curse of an aching heart. Frank on clarinet this time, and on vocals till the battery on the mic gave up.
After that they were back to the Market Square for lunch and another set.
