GIJF Day 1: Binker & Moses @ Sage Gateshead - March 31

Binker Golding (tenor saxophone) & Moses Boyd (drums)
(Review by Russell)
Tenor sax and drums! Young British musicians Binker Golding and Moses Boyd are currently on the road as a duo with their take on the intense, full-on tenor and drums rollercoaster. This Sage Two cockpit theatre, late night event drew a large and enthusiastic Gateshead International Jazz
Festival crowd. Few, if any, of those present would have heard John Coltrane live. Indeed few of the many young people present would be anything other than into Binker and Moses and a good thing too. The Millennial generation will find its own way into jazz.

Tenor man Golding cuts the more serious figure, Boyd the more carefree, genial character. As in any successful partnership, there is an understanding of principle and procedure. Golding hit on a hard-blowing riff and Boyd wasn’t inclined to let him down gently, rapid-fire bass pedals kicking in urging ever-greater lung-busting feats from Golding. As and when the tenor dropped out (Golding swigging bottled water and drawing in oxygen) Boyd didn’t stop, no way! Lightening quick, hands and feet, a powerhouse display behind the traps, Golding’s rejuvenated tenor looking to clamber aboard the roller coaster once more.
Binker and Moses – let’s be specific, Moses – said it was great to be in Newcastle, never having visited before. The Geordie crowd put the record straight…Gateshead! A light bulb moment…the duo had been here – that’s Sage Gateshead – with Zara McFarlane. Laughter, apologies, then on with the show. The two twenty-somethings are accomplished musicians, this full-on project has a way to go. Next time, be it Newcastle, Gateshead, or anywhere else for that matter, get on board the Binker-Moses’ rollercoaster.

Russell.

They also supported Bad Plus and a shortish support slot was enough for me. I've ordered the album, mostly cos they're joined by various other musicians on the second CD, so I'm really looking forward to the contrast.
